Liberals Don’t Get It; Trumpites Are A Different Animal

There’s a scene in the TV series “The Sopranos” where Dr. Melfi, Tony’s psychiatrist, is told by her husband that “there is no cure for a sociopath…they are animals.” It suddenly dawns on Dr. Melfi that all of her years spent working to help Tony have been for naught. Psychoanalyzing an animal is pointless. Talk therapy does not help. Meds don’t help. Trying to understand them is pointless. Ascribing normal human standards to their behaviors is an exercise in futility. In the end, one must realize that they can’t be persuaded, shamed, or cajoled to do the right thing. They have no conscience or morality. They are concerned only with themselves, and they live to prey on others.

This is what liberals do not understand about Trumpites. We try to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that their anger is somehow justified. We look for justification for their irrational hatred of Hillary and Democrats. We hope that Trump’s language and behavior are just a means to a better end. We delve into sociological causations for the disaffection of the white working class. We make excuses for college-educated females who voted for Trump. We desperately search for a glimmer of sensibility in half of all voters supporting a compulsive liar, sexual predator, tax cheat and business fraud.

Liberals, please listen. There is no humanity in a Trumpite. Stop attributing human qualities to non-humans. They are animals, devoid of compassion, empathy and concern for the greater good. They live, breathe and think only for themselves. The rest of us are merely marks in their con games. Like their leader, they use humans as a way to get what they want for themselves. And they couldn’t care less if others are happy, safe or prosperous as long as they are. Take Obamacare, for example.

You know why they want to rip it apart? It’s not because they have some deeply and thoughtfully considered socioeconomic objections, or that they see a better way of implementing universal care. No. It is simply because they do not want others, especially those beneath them, to be cared for. The well-being of others makes them furious, especially if their tax dollars contribute in some small way to that abomination. Even if Trumpites have their own wealth and comfort, they do not want others to share in the same abundance. For what is the point of being prosperous if others have it too? Remember, animals fend for themselves. Sociopaths are merely snakes on the prowl, not beneficent do-gooders.

Gun obsession is another example of the sociopath’s self-centeredness. In his view, the world is a jungle, and a weapon gives him the advantage. The animal seeks to intimidate and cow others, and he assumes that all others are animals too…ones from which he needs to be protected. It never enters a Trumpite’s head that liberals want everyone to be protected, that the greater good is served by keeping guns out of irresponsible hands, that liberals want humanity to exist on a higher plane of shared decency and respect. For the animal there is no such plane. There is only the jungle. There is only me.

Liberals, wake up. Trumpites are animals. Conscienceless, amoral, hateful, brutal, and completely devoid of remorse. (If Democrats had won the election despite losing the popular vote by millions, they would have felt guilty. But not these animals.) Stop treating them like they are human. Call them out for what they are. Shame them for their shamelessness. Be relentless in pointing out their inhumanity. And don’t forget, you cannot appease an animal. You cannot compromise with it; you cannot work with it. It will bite your head off as soon as you turn your back on it.

Thankfully, in America animals are still outnumbered by human beings. Appeal to human beings’ decency and sense of righteousness. And stop trying to figure out Trumpites. Sociopaths are incurable.

Scientists Finally Fact Check The Republicans; They All Flunk

This Republican presidential campaign cycle has sunk to new lows.  Stupidity is a virtue.  Ignorance is a blessing.  Believing in myths raises one’s poll numbers.  Hatred is rewarded.  Intolerance is applauded.  Violent threats are encouraged.  Warmongering is all the rage.

The attributes which make one suitable to win the Republican nomination are ones that a troglodyte would be proud of.  They would make a circus clown blush.  Even elephants have more sense.  Sociopaths have more compassion.  Imprisoned felons are more qualified for high office.  Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne are smarter.

What does this say about Republican voters?  Well, if the candidates reflect their followers’ values, GOP voters are viciously angry, criminally uninformed, heartless, soulless, hate-filled white Christian extremists.  Lacking the conscience necessary to qualify as human beings, the candidates pander to this base and say the most outrageous things.

Recently, a panel of scientific experts was convened to fact check what Republicans have to say about climate change.  What a great idea.  Finally, smart people calling out stupid people and the stupid things they say.  The Republicans graded out as imbeciles.  The harshest comments were reserved for Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

“This individual [Cruz] understands less about science (and climate change) than the average kindergartner,” Michael Mann, a Pennsylvania State University meteorology professor, wrote of Cruz’s statements. “That sort of ignorance would be dangerous in a doorman, let alone a president.”

Harvard scientist Jim McCarthy, a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, called Trump’s comments “nonsense,” while Emmanuel Vincent, a climate scientist at the University of California, Merced, said, “the candidate does not appear to have any commitment to accuracy.”

I suggest we convene panels of experts in all areas to fact check each moronic utterance that emits from Republican mouths.  At each Republican debate [when will they ever end?] let’s gather religious historians, constitutional scholars, law professors, crime statisticians, economic wizards, and foreign policy experts to call “bullshit” on every Republican whopper.  The fate of America, and the globe, should not be left to a bunch of ruthless jackals and inveterate liars.

How Republican Sociopaths Have Ruined America

Much of what ails society today is the proliferation of sociopaths.  I’m not just talking about hardened criminals either; sociopaths are everywhere, in all walks of life.  In fact, the traits they possess are the very traits which impel one to succeed and rise to positions of power in a capitalistic society.  CEOs, Wall Street billionaires, politicians, military chiefs, intelligence operatives, and  right-wing talking heads are among those who have used their sociopathological personality disorders to rule America.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could identify a sociopath before he/she comes to power?  Think of how much better our lives and our country would be if only we knew who the conscienceless bastards really were before we voted for them, came under their employ, listened to their cons, fell prey to their manipulation.  The problem is, they are not easily identified because they wear masks.  They try to fit in by mimicking normal behavior in public.  Some are even charming.  They seduce us with their outward appearance of normalcy, but inside they are godless devils bent on perverting the greater good for their own means.

In the past 35 years America has slowly been transformed from a nation of common purpose  to a nation of the rich, by wealthy, and for the sociopathic few.  That’s because  many of the people in power (mostly Republicans) have been crass opportunists concerned with self- advancement  at the expense of the greater good.  In the age of Reagan, the self-centeredness was heightened to a virtue.  The 1980s gave rise to a rogue’s gallery of Gordon Gekkos and their “greed is good” philosophy.  It wasn’t just Reagan and his policies though, it was the sociopaths he ushered into public service—the Bushes, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Oliver North, William Casey  and a whole band of despicable criminals. The country became more selfish, less communal, and more cynical.  It was then that we started letting the Almighty buck rule all facets of American life.  The more money you had, the more admired you were.  Fuck generosity and compassion for the less fortunate.

Since then, sociopaths have started illicit wars, drained the national treasury, raped Mother Nature, ruined the climate, and given rise to Rush Limbaugh, FOX News, Newt Gingrich, Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, et al.  There seem to be more sociopaths than human beings in positions of power.  Maybe that was the whole point.  Now the Extreme Court (uh..er…Supreme Court) has gotten in on the act, by making it easier for sociopathic billionaires to control (read subvert) the democratic process.  Smarmy Vegas casino operators (like Shel Adelson) and fascist industrialists (like the Koch brothers) have far more say in how our government operates than 99% of us.

As a public service then, I am herewith giving you tips on how to spot a sociopath.  If you recognize them in someone, alert authorities and resist the urge to succumb to their wiles.

Traits of a Sociopath (based on the work of psychologists Robert Hare):  While some experts believe that sociopathy has a genetic origin, Hare believed that a sociopath’s behavior “is shaped by social forces and is the result of a dysfunctional environment.”  Hare formed a list of traits common to sociopaths.  Here are the most prevalent:

–Sociopaths are manipulative and very skilled at taking advantage of the good intentions of others .  Allen Dulles, former CIA chief, is a good example.  He was appointed by President Eisenhower in 1953 after promising Ike that the CIA could avoid WWIII by overthrowing socialist and communist countries around the globe via bloodless coups.  Eisenhower, a decent man shaken by the horrors of the second World War, turned over foreign policy to Allen and his brother Foster.  The Dulles brothers, sociopaths of the worst kind, turned America into quasi-fascist Orwellian state by using their enormous power to control the media, murder innocent citizens, evoke hatred of America around the globe, and cover up the assassination of JFK.  All the while, the Dulleses were enriching themselves and their corporate partners—the Forbeses, the Browns, the Rockefellers, the DuPonts, the Hunts—the oldest, richest families in the country.  And Kennedy haters all.

–They have a grandiose sense of self; they think they are better than everyone else, and if they have more money or power than others they use this to their constant advantage.  Moreover, the fact that a sociopath may be wealthier than others or in a position of power over others merely confirms in the sociopath’s mind that he/she is better than others.  In the modern age, who feels more entitled than the richest among us?  The Koch brothers, desperately trying to buy the government, runs roughshod over the poor, the elderly, minorities, and social safety nets.  They care only their own profits.  We should have carved a big “S” in their foreheads at birth, just as Brad Pitt marked Christoph Waltz with a swastika in “Inglourious Basterds.”  Our lives would be much better if we knew whom we were dealing with upfront.

–They are pathological liars; when they are committing acts that harm the greater good of society, they never tell the truth, even if they are caught in a lie.  To this day, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and their lackeys still deny that the Iraq war was about oil, despite all evidence to the contrary.

–They have no remorse or guilt, regardless of how heinous their actions are.  When recently asked if he would do anything differently, if he had to do it all over again, Cheney responded, “No.”

–They lack empathy and are callous in their treatment of others.  Mitt Romney dismissed 47% of the country with one glib comment.

–They are contemptuous of those who seek to understand them.  One of Allen Dulles’s protégés, Frank Wisner, head of the CIA’s Operation Mockingbird in the 1950s, once famously bragged, “The press claims to be free and open in America.  But they are nothing but my personal puppets.  I can pull any string I want and they will follow along.”

–They do not perceive that anything is wrong with them.  Even if they are proven wrong, and even if all about them acknowledge their wrongdoing, the sociopath will never admit to wrongdoing.  See Dick Cheney quote above.

–They are authoritarians; in many cases, they were raised in authoritarian homes where the appearance of uniformity and conformity far outweighed love, compassion, empathy, and charity as laudable qualities.  Henry Kissinger once said of Richard Nixon (a raging sociopath), “Imagine what he could have been if anyone had ever loved him.”

–They are secretive; at all costs they strive to keep their true behaviors and thoughts hidden.  Allen and Foster Dulles, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George Bush, Richard Nixon, and Oliver North were nothing if not secretive.

–They are paranoid.  Can you imagine anyone more paranoid than Dick Nixon?

–They diligently present a “normal” outward appearance when engaging others.  This is what confounds us about all sociopaths.  Usually we don’t unmask them until it is too late.

–They experience pleasure from enslaving their victims.  And all people they encounter are potential victims, even loved ones.  “Loved ones” is a misnomer, because sociopaths are incapable of love.  Again, Dick Cheney is the perfect example of someone who seemed to derive pleasure from inflicting pain.  Witness the detainees at Guantanamo.  Cheney does not consider what he did torture, yet a 600-page nonpartisan report says he did exactly that.

–When they collaborate, they feed off one another, and their actions become even more diabolical.  No better example of this than the Cheney-Rumsfeld partnerships during the two Bush presidencies.

Sociopathy of Billionaire Predators

In a previous post I discussed the harmful effects that right-wing billionaires have on our sociocultural lives.  Because of their enormous wealth and power, their evil influence penetrates all strata of American society–in politics, business, education, medicine, the environment, and our collective values (or lack thereof).  A new article published in today’s Op-Ed News redirects my perspective on this matter.  Writer and Op-Ed publisher Rob Kall asserts that billionaires are sociopaths, and we should treat them as such.  What is a sociopath?  Most psychologists define sociopaths as people who lack a conscience.  They are rapacious and greedy without regard for others, and they will say or do anything to get their way.  There is a streak of narcissism in sociopaths, who by and large care only for themselves and not one whit for others.  This is in line with the American conservative’s political philosophy, in that Republicans support policies that promote individual wealth and autocracy at the expense of the greater good.

In his article entitled “Monuments Men, Gestapo Generals, Billionaires,” Kall goes even further with his indictment of conscienceless billionaires: “These people are not just wealthy. They are parasites who exploit workers, who are the biggest welfare hogs, using and taking advantage of the government, the commons and the middle class. They are the generals in the class war– a war that they and their ilk started and have been ginning up. They are enemy generals. Their spending, which I would estimate runs in the billions of dollars, more if you include the welfare and parasitization they engage in, is used to destroy lives, and it actually kills people, or kills their hopes and dreams. They are indeed far worse than billionaire Tom Perkins whined when he spoke of comparing the wealthy to the Jewish victims of Kristallnacht.

“Let’s talk about Perkins. This man recently sold his yacht– the biggest  sailing yacht ever built– 289 feet– for about $100 million dollars– at least $50 million less than he paid for it.  The Megayacht news website that reported this stated that Perkins kept the personal two man submarine he had built.  This man attacks the people of Occupy for challenging the one percent. He feels threatened. He should feel threatened. No, I don’t want to do to him as I would do to a Nazi general. But I do want to end his life as a billionaire. I do want to eliminate all billionaires from the planet.

“That doesn’t mean I want to kill them or harm them. No. I want to take away what they do not deserve– their wealth. No sane person deserves, wants or needs billions of dollars. No person needs a 289 foot private sailing yacht. No person needs to privately own a painting or work of art that costs over $100 million. People who feel the need to possess that much money and such obscene, even pornographic possessions are sick. More and more people are saying  it takes a sociopath to run a fortune 500 company or to become a billionaire.  I’ve learned a bit about sociopaths and they are part of a collection of predators and malevolent personalities, which include psychopaths, anti-social personalities, narcissists and Borderline personalities. I’d also throw in addicts and hoarders to the list.”

What Kall is saying is that the same traits that define someone as mentally deranged in psychological terms are also the traits that propel one to enormous wealth in the dog-eat-dog world of capitalism.  This makes me wonder if sociopaths are born or made.  DSM, the bible of Psychology, asserts that many sociopaths come from homes where one or both are parents are tyrants.  The home is a rigid, tense place where mental or physical abuse may be used on the developing child.  The sociopath exhibits then the tendency to be deceptive, discompassionate, and desocial in childhood.  He learns that in order to succeed in the world, he needs to amass more power than those who have subjugated him, and by any means necessary he goes about accumulating this power.  Since, in America at least, power is wealth, the sociopath’s overriding ambition is to gain and hoard as much money as possible.

All this makes me wonder–can we identify the “sociopath” in early life and quarantine him before he does society a great deal of harm.  Just think, with this knowledge we might have saved the world from Adolph Hitler, Strom Thurmond, Benito Mussolini, Anthony Scalia, Dick Cheney, John Schnatter, the Koch brothers, and Allen Dulles among many other criminally insane sociopaths.  Alas, if we could diagnose and isolate sociopaths, the Tea Party would claim that we were doing too much social engineering.  Hey, I can still dream, right?

Kall concludes, “Billionaires are predators who step on, step over and remorselessly destroy, harm or even kill people to reach their goals– usually to win and dominate. And these people don’t become billionaires or successes alone. They corrupt and buy (infect) many people– politicians, regulators, judges along the  blood way to get to the top. Just as generals in wars make decisions to spend the lives of troops, billionaires and CEOs consider the costs of people who are sickened by pollution or who die because they didn’t have access to healthcare to be an acceptable part of doing business. And don’t dare try to tell me that everyone can go to the emergency room. If that’s what you are thinking, crawl back under your rock, like a good insect.”
