Thom Hartmann Names Names of Senate Republican Gun-Lobby Whores

While Congressional Democrats conduct a righteous gun control “sit-in,” and 92% of the American people long for common sense gun reform, you may wonder who exactly are the people blocking an assault weapons ban and voting to arm terrorists? Well, wonder no more. Thanks to a crusading liberal author and talk-show host, we now have the names of the Republican man-servants of the NRA.

Thom Hartmann, in an article he wrote for Op-ed News, exposes the diabolical corruption:

“It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the NRA contributed a total of more than $36 million to 50 Republican senators over the course of their careers, according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund. And there are 10 Republican senators, representing 10 percent of the votes in the Senate, who have gotten an average of $3 million apiece over the course of their careers. These include veteran lawmakers like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has brought in at least $1.3 million over his 30-year career; Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who have each received $1.4 million over their careers; and Pat Roberts from Kansas who has gotten nearly $1.6 million over the last 20 years. Sen. John McCain tops the list, though, by raking in nearly $8 million from the NRA over his 30-year career in the Senate.

“Then there are the junior lawmakers, like Tom Cotton from Arkansas, who has only been serving in the Senate since last year and has already received $1.9 million in money from the NRA and its buddies. And in just the first two years of serving in office, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy has brought in $2.9 million for his votes against gun regulation, while Iowa’s Joni Ernst brought in $3.1 million, Cory Gardner from Colorado has brought in $3.9 million and Thom Tillis has gotten $4.4 million.

“Considering the fact that the NRA has spent over $16 million on five freshmen senators alone, and considering the fact that half of the members of the Senate have gotten donations of some size from the gun lobby, it really shouldn’t come as any surprise that our lawmakers won’t pass popular gun control legislation.

“If we ever do want to see common-sense gun control legislation passed, we need to get money out of politics, we need to overturn Citizens United and we need to get the corrupting influence of corporate lobbyists out of our political system. Because as former President Jimmy Carter has pointed out, we’re no longer living in a democracy where US politicians listen to the will of the American people.”

America Is For Sale, And The Kochs Are Buyers

Thanks to the richest brothers on the planet we now know what the price tag on democracy is: $889 million. That’s what the Kochs are willing to spend to purchase the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The price seems a little low, considering the rich heritage of the merchandise…after all, we are talking about two and a half centuries of what Thomas Jefferson called a “great experiment…which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth.” Seems Jefferson was wrong though; we will now be ruled by money. A bit tawdry to put a price tag on previously revered entities once occupied by incorruptible giants like Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Moynihan, Stevenson, Baker, and the like. The fact that the previous owner of the White House was a black man may have the dropped the price a bit.

Ted Cruz was on TV the other day decrying liberals who depict the Kochs as “the nexus of all evil.” Ted’s only half right. The Kochs need corrupt, maniacal, right-wing zealots like Cruz to complete the nexus. The list of Koch supplicants is a mile long; it includes nearly every conservative nut job one can imagine—Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, Joni Ernst, Louis Gohmert—the crazier the better. Being a Koch-funded politician has become quite profitable. The median wealth of a typical congressman is now over $1 million. That’s nice for them, but bad for the rest of us who need government to work for all the people, not just Mr. Burns, Old Man Potter, and Ebenezer Scrooge.

You see, the Kochs are nuttier than pet squirrels, and their politics make Himmler seem like a moderate. Their forebears were notorious Nazis, and their father was the founder of the John Birch Society. Throw in millions from their wildly lucrative businesses, and you’ve got a fascist, imperious concoction cloaked in a lot of extremist “freedom of enterprise” rhetoric.

The Kochs’ megalomaniacal goal of transforming America from a democracy to oligarchy began in 1963 when Koch the father paid for and distributed “JFK: Wanted For Treason Posters” in Dallas in November 1963. (You see the super-rich were paying 78% income taxes under Kennedy, who also wanted to gut the power of Texas oil millionaires who paid no taxes.) A half century later the transformation is nearly complete. If the Kochs get enough of their pawns elected, we will see the end of health care access for the poor, the eradication of Social Security and Medicare, the end of public education, the perpetuation of a permanently crumbling infrastructure, and the disappearance of the middle class. The new socioeconomic strata will consist of two levels: the super-rich and the super-poor. The America of Koch will consist of yacht owners sailing past homeless vagrants sleeping on the beach; San Simeon-like castles towering above decaying slums; beggars herded into detention camps so as not to bother the 1% with their dreary needs. The Third Reich without the concern for its citizens.

Let’s officially dispense with the charade. We can drop the superfluous and misleading political titles, like Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader from Kentucky…or House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. From now on they should be addressed as Mitch McConnell, the distinguished leader of Koch Industries, and John Boehner, the Koch spokesperson in the House.

What can we do about all this? It’s simple: don’t ever vote for a Republican again as long as you live. And boycott all Koch industry products.

What Do Midterm Results Mean? Right-Wing Extremists Are Good Liars

Recently a secret recording was made of a Republican lobbyist, named Richard Berman, addressing a meeting of energy-industry executives. What the lobbyist revealed is at the core of the right-wing strategy for getting Americans to vote against their own interests. “We exploit their basest emotions. We prey on their fear, greed and anger. The truth never matters. Because if we hit them in their gut, they don’t care what the truth is.” With these “inspiring” words Berman elicited millions in donations for Republican political candidates from a quasi-fascist group called Western Energy Alliance, whose members include Halliburton, Devon Energy, and Anadarko Petroleum. And because the Supreme Court has removed limits on corporate spending, right-wing billionaire groups like Western Energy can literally buy elections with their money. That’s the right-wing playbook. That’s how it works. That’s America in 2014. The richest, greediest, most conservative people in the country can hire paid liars to do their bidding to get what they want.

Climate change is real, but liars like Louis Gohmert can convince voters it’s not by pointing out that it’s a black man who has the audacity to tell us it’s real. Obamacare is working, but Mitch McConnell can exploit racist Kentuckians to believe otherwise. Scott Walker can convince working class Wisconsinites that their taxes will go up if they don’t elect him; in reality, it is only the super-rich whose taxes will rise. The rise of lower and middle class families makes America better, but when white bigots see blacks and Latinos getting opportunities, they become jealous, angry and fearful. Limbaugh and FOX News exploit this fear with dire warnings of brown people swarming into America spreading disease, going on welfare, and voting for minority candidates. The colored hordes are coming, is the message.

To fend off these lies, one must be educated and well-read. Sadly, most of white, rural America is woefully unlearned. They can’t afford higher education, and they have limited access to the truth. They will believe the most bellicose, incendiary, and hateful voices they hear. That’s how Republicans want them—stupid, poor, and pissed-off. The way they will always be under Republican rule.
